World Music Map
“World Music Map” is a project that aspires to create a visual map and library of the music that man made. It targets people who are interested in seeing how music varies and relates throughout the world. It is based on ethnomusicology, which is the study of social and cultural aspects of music in local and global contexts. The main deliverable is going to be three big world map prints, which breaks the world music down into categories: (1) Climate, (2) Language, (3) Instruments.
Each of these categories are going to be based on existing map types. Such as “music by climate” is a thermal, “music by language” is a thematic
and “music by instruments” is a topographic map. Maps are going to act
a visual graph and statistics, with the help of specific assets. Each map has an visual element of its own, relevant to the subject.(1) Music by climate
visual component: color swatches, gradients
(2) Music by language
visual component: typography, lyrics
(3) Music by instruments
visual component: icons, patternsThe other component is going to be the interactive website. The website will basically provide a better access to the research, and will have profiles for certain regions with statistics (using the assets {icons, type, color} ).
